Byrdak is the Word

I advocated the return of Tim Byrdak on a one-year deal a couple of weeks ago, and yesterday the Mets re-signed him for 2012. One-year deal, as it seems.

I assume Manny Acosta, Bobby Parnell and Danny Herrera, all under team control, will be returning as well. So with Byrdak, that’s four vaguely usable relievers right there. A team probably needs eight, nine, ten usable relievers, considering injuries and ineffectiveness, so the Mets still have a way to go rebuilding their pen. But this blog hereĀ endorsesĀ the return of Byrdak as one step in that plan.

Agree …. assume the number is 10 …. Acosta and Byrdak are two …. maybe Herrera, ut does it make sense ot have tow LOOGYs? And Parnell is a complete waste of space … two down — eight to go.

      1. I think Parnell will pitch better, at least well enough to be an average reliever.

      2. Carrying two LOOGYs is kind of insane. That’s two pitchers who are going to combine for 80 innings at the most, which is going to put a ton of stress on the other relievers. But Byrdak in the majors and Herrera in the minors as insurance? I don’t see why not. You need ten useful relievers, but only seven in the majors at a time. Or use one as a situational lefty and the other as a mopup guy/ situtational lefty when needed.
